What does this measure?

The number of clean energy communities by designation status in each county as a percent of total municipalities.

Why is this important?

Clean Energy Communities program is a program sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) aimed at encouraging and helping local governments implement high-impact clean energy actions through NYSERDA-provided grants, guidance and coordination support.

Communities that implement one or more high-impact actions are designated "Participating Communities," while those that complete four or more actions earn the "Clean Energy Community" designation. In addition to these designations, communities earn points for each action they implement, which then makes them eligible for higher state grant amounts to implement future actions.

How is our region performing?

In the region, 35% of the communities are designated as Clean Energy Communities (having completed four or more actions), just above New York State's overall 34% rate. However, just 29% of regional communities are Participating Communities (one or more actions), about half of the 57% rate in the state as a whole.

Locally, Ontario County has the highest rate of CEC communities, at 58%, (15 communities) followed by Monroe County at 53% (16 communities). Wyoming County at 13% (three communities) and Seneca County at 14% (2 communities) have the lowest rates of CEC communities.

For Participating Communities, Wayne County has the highest rate at 56% (nine communities), while Wyoming County has the lowest rate at 4% (one community).
