Greenhouse gases absorb the wavelengths of radiation that Earth emits, creating the greenhouse effect and raising the surface temperature of the planet. In New York, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) calls for greenhouse gas emissions reductions of 40% by 2030.

In our region, emissions totaled nearly 24 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per capita in 2018. Seneca and Genesee counties were our region's top emitters of greenhouse gases per capita at 65 and 60 respectively. Monroe was the lowest emitting county per at 15 metric tons per capita, but it had the largest total of any county in the region at more than 11 million.
